Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed(ediah)
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

The Ballad of Jed Clampett by Paul Henning

How come no one names their kid Jededaih anymore? Classy name, destined for success. “Do you Jededaih take this woman Britany to be your lawful wedded wife?” Cool, huh?

Our first visit to Jededaih Island started me thinking about the name. Perhaps thinking too much. You be the judge.

The Island itself is a treat. Tucked between Lasqueti and Texada, the whole Island is a Provencial Marine Park. It used to be privately owned by a series of farming families. After he died climbing K2, Dan Culver’s estate purchased the Island and gave it to the government.

Nowdays, you can walk the trails, visit the old homestead and orchard, and perhaps see the now-wild sheep that roam the Island.

We dropped the anchor, stern tied, and begin our walk at Deep Bay.
